Following the opening of the application portal, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has encouraged all qualified applicants to submit an application for the funds.

First-time applicants for scholarships and loans should visit www.hef.co.ke, click on “register,” and create an account.

Rule 1 - Valid Phone Number

The HELB states that before beginning the application procedure, a candidate wishing to apply for financing must have a working phone number and email address.

According to HELB, it is essential for applicants to furnish accurate information and utilize a valid phone number.

Rule 2 - Valid Email Address

Moreover, applicants are required to use a valid email address accompanied by a memorable password, ensuring the email account is accessible prior to initiating the application process.

Subsequently, applicants need to check their email (including Inbox and Spam/Junk folders) to activate their account and log in. Following this, they must enter a valid telephone number for verification purposes.

Rule 3 - Correct KCSE Index Number

The correct KCSE Index Number and the year of examination must be used by applicants, along with their current university or college details.

Kindly note, the year of the exam and the index numbers for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) must be present.

Rule 4 - Provide National ID and Maisha Card

Applicants must confirm the possession of national identification (ID) cards. In the absence of national IDs, they are advised against using another person’s ID and instead should use their KCSE Index Number.

Similar to other application procedures, candidates must submit a copy of their Maisha cards or National Identity cards in PDF format, showing both sides.

Rule 5 - Provide Birth Certificate

The provision of birth certificates in PDF format will be necessary for applicants under the age of eighteen (18) in lieu of identification.

Rule 6 - Submit Passport Size Photo

For their application to be accepted, qualified candidates must additionally submit a copy of a passport-size photo in jpeg, jpg, or png format.

Rule 7 - Provide Bank Account/MPESA Number

An applicant must provide the board with legitimate bank account information or a genuine MPESA number that is registered under their name and ID number in order for HELB to easily disburse the cash.

Rule 8 - Inter-University Transfer

Furthermore, applicants should update their guarantor details and provide loan payment information, either through bank or mobile payment.

  • Visit the official HELB portal
  • Click on the Tab Indicated create account to create your HELB account
  • Update your account details correctly
  • If you are applying for the first time. Select First Time Undergraduate Loan Application
  • Start filling your form accurately. Don’t skip any step (You will be expected to fill personal details, education, university, parents, family expenses, guarantors, and Bank details). So make sure you have them.
  • After you have completed filling your form, confirm your details before submitting
  • Submit and print your HELB Form.
  • Print two copies of the forms
  • Let all the necessary parts be signed by the respective persons on the two copies
  • Submit one filled form to the nearest Huduma Centre or the HELB offices in your area.
  • Keep the remaining form for your records.
